BuildZoom Reputation Management

BuildZoom pairs contractor reviews with public permit data, giving homeowners a verification layer most review platforms don’t have when vetting a contractor for a larger project.

Why the BuildZoom Score isn’t a review average

The BuildZoom Score isn’t a star-rating average — it’s a proprietary score, starting at 90 for licensed contractors, built from public-record and marketplace data. License status with the governing state board carries the heaviest weight: BuildZoom says a suspended or revoked license can cost up to 40 points and puts a contractor in the bottom 10% of all listed contractors regardless of how active they are on the platform otherwise.

Reviews are one input among several, not the whole calculation. BuildZoom weights reviews from clients who hired a contractor through the platform more heavily than reviews collected elsewhere, and folds in verified/permitted work history, BBB rating and accreditation, records from local government consumer-protection agencies, and marketplace behavior — response rate, bid rate, and hire rate (measured by project dollar value, not just count). Recent activity counts more than older activity.

BuildZoom states plainly that it does not disclose the exact formula or weighting behind the score, specifically to keep it from being duplicated or gamed. That means no outside calculator — including this one — can model precisely how many reviews move the number. What’s publicly documented is the list of inputs and their relative importance, which is what the guidance below is built from.

What actually moves a BuildZoom Score

  • License status with the governing state board — the single heaviest factor; a suspended or revoked license can cost up to 40 points and drops a contractor into the bottom 10% regardless of anything else.
  • Licensed contractors start at a baseline score of 90.
  • Verified and permitted work history, plus BBB rating and accreditation where applicable, count as independent third-party signals.
  • Reviews from clients who hired the contractor through BuildZoom are weighted more heavily than reviews from clients found elsewhere.
  • Marketplace behavior — response rate, bid rate, and hire rate weighted by project dollar value — feeds directly into the score.
  • Recent activity counts more than older activity in the calculation.
  • The exact weighting formula is not published; BuildZoom states this is deliberate, to prevent the score from being gamed.
