Trustpilot Reputation Management
Trustpilot is widely used by online shoppers to verify a business before completing a purchase, and its review data is often surfaced directly in search results and shopping ads. A strong Trustpilot profile is a direct trust signal at the point of purchase.
Why TrustScore isn’t a simple average
Trustpilot’s TrustScore is a Bayesian average, not a plain arithmetic mean of your star ratings. A new business’s score starts weighted toward a small number of neutral phantom reviews, which dilutes as real reviews come in — so a handful of early five-star reviews moves the needle less than the same reviews would once you have a longer track record.
Recency also matters. The most recent reviews carry more weight than older ones, and Trustpilot’s own guidance is that a steady, consistent flow of reviews produces a more stable score than sporadic bursts. A business that stops collecting reviews for months can see its TrustScore behave less predictably even without any new negative feedback.
The score is then translated into a 1–5 star display in half-star increments using standard rounding — and shows as 0 until a business receives its first review.
What actually moves a TrustScore
- Bayesian averaging — new or low-review businesses are weighted toward a neutral starting point that dilutes as genuine reviews accumulate.
- Recency weighting — recent reviews influence the score more than older ones.
- Review consistency — a steady stream of reviews produces a more stable score than infrequent bursts.
- Guideline compliance — reviews Trustpilot removes for violating its guidelines (fake, incentivized, wrong-business) don’t count toward the score at all.
