What actually moves a Tripadvisor bubble rating

Tripadvisor’s bubble rating is a straightforward average of every eligible guest rating a business has received — not a Bayesian or decay-weighted score. Tripadvisor confirmed this directly in its own FAQ on the February 2025 update that made displayed ratings more precise: "We will continue using a simple average of all posted review ratings for each business, experience, or individual product as before, with a more precise number being shown." That update changed the displayed precision — ratings now show to the nearest tenth (e.g., 4.3) instead of only the nearest half-bubble — but not the underlying math.

That’s a genuinely different fact from what most third-party guides claim, and it’s easy to conflate with a separate metric: the Popularity Ranking. The Popularity Ranking is the algorithm that decides where a business sorts against comparable listings in the same location and category, and it does factor in quality (the bubble rating), quantity of reviews, and recency together. But it’s a sort order, not the number on the profile — a business can have a lower bubble rating and still outrank a competitor with a higher one if its review flow is more recent and consistent.

  • A simple average — Tripadvisor’s own update FAQ confirms every eligible guest rating carries equal, unweighted weight in the displayed number, with no Bayesian smoothing or age-based decay applied to the score itself.
  • Displayed to the nearest tenth since February 2025 (the bubble icon still rounds to the nearest half for visual display), so the underlying average is more visible than it used to be.
  • Guideline compliance — reviews Tripadvisor removes for being fake, incentivized, conflict-of-interest, or otherwise in violation never enter the average.
  • Kept separate from the Popularity Ranking, which layers quality (the bubble rating), review quantity, and recency into an algorithmic sort order used for search placement — a different mechanism than the rating shown on your profile.
