What actually moves a Google Play rating
Play Console tracks two different numbers, and Google is explicit they aren’t the same thing. The "Google Play rating" shown to users on the store listing is, per Google’s own help documentation, "calculated based on your most recent ratings" — weighted toward recency rather than a flat average of every rating an app has ever received. A separate "lifetime average rating" reflects the average since launch and is visible only to the developer in Play Console. Google doesn’t publish the exact weighting formula or the recency window it uses, so the public number can move noticeably after a version update even without a corresponding shift in the lifetime figure.
A new rating or review isn’t instant. Google’s documentation notes new submissions are held for review — typically around 24 hours — before they’re published and counted, and that hold can extend if the activity looks suspicious. Because the visible score is recency-weighted, a real shift in current user sentiment (a bad release, a bug fix, a UI change) tends to show up in the public rating faster than it would on a platform using a flat lifetime average.
- Recency-weighted, not a flat average — Google states the public rating "is calculated based on your most recent ratings," with the exact weighting and time window undisclosed.
- Two separate numbers — the public "Google Play rating" and a developer-only "lifetime average rating" can diverge, especially around a version update.
- Review hold — a new rating or review is held for review (around 24 hours, longer if flagged) before it’s published and counted toward the score.
- Policy compliance filter — incentivized, fraudulent, automated, or otherwise policy-violating ratings and reviews don’t count, whether Google blocks them before publication or removes them afterward.
