What Google Play Will Actually Remove — and What It Won’t

A genuine negative review from a real user stays up, even if it’s harsh. Here’s what does qualify for removal on Google Play, and how the reporting process actually works.

Yes, in specific cases — Google Play removes reviews that violate its Comment Posting Policy: fake, duplicate, or multi-account reviews, reviews posted to manipulate the rating, spam or promotional content, reviews exposing personal or confidential information, and reviews with a clear conflict of interest, such as a developer reviewing their own app. A real user’s genuine but unflattering account of their experience is not grounds for removal. Unlike some other Google products, Google Play does not offer a formal appeal if a report is rejected — its own help documentation states plainly that once a report is denied, "you can’t report the same review again."

What qualifies for removal

  • The review is fake, posted repeatedly, or submitted from multiple accounts for the same app
  • The review was posted to manipulate the app’s rating rather than reflect a genuine experience
  • The content is spam, promotional, or unrelated to an actual use of the app
  • The review exposes personal or confidential information, or contains prohibited content under Google Play’s Comment Posting Policy
  • The review has a clear conflict of interest — for example, a developer or someone with a financial stake in the app reviewing it

Frequently asked questions

In Play Console, go to Monitor and improve > Ratings and reviews > Reviews, find the review, select the flag icon, and choose Report. A Google specialist reviews the report against the Comment Posting Policy, typically within a few business days.

Google’s own guidance is that a specialist reviews a reported review "within a few business days." You’ll see the review removed if it’s found to violate the Comment Posting Policy, or a notification that the request was rejected if it doesn’t.

There’s no formal appeal on Google Play — Google’s documentation states that once a report is rejected, you can’t report that same review again. Developers also face a daily submission limit for reports across their account, with a 24-hour wait if that limit is hit.
